In all the books leading up to the Half Blood Prince and the Deathly Hallows, Snape is thought to be a Death Eater and an evil seeming person. In the Half Blood Prince we learn some more about him. In the Deathly Hallows, he turns out to be a really good person with a bad past.
Snape was my all time favorite character after I read those two books. I am not going to say any more for the people that didn't read the books yet.

Snape is a great person. Maybe his personality didn't show himself in the best light but his intentions alone are enough to express who he is.
